***All Adopted!*** The 26 Second Chance Dogs

***Due to the large amount of interest expressed in these dogs, please call the shelter at 507-644-3853 if you are interested in adopting , or stop in during open hours, no appointment necessary, M-F 2-6 and Sat 10-noon.

We have 26 small breed dogs who are in need of homes! For those of you who haven’t noticed the large number of barking dogs in our kennels for the past month, they were a part of a seizure from a single residence hoarding situation. The owner of these dogs kept them in tiny crates and used a number of them as puppy factories. Most, if not all, are mixes. There appears to be chihuahua, Pomeranian, Papillon, rat terrier, and dachsund breeds present in them. (Some of these dogs might be combinations of all of these and more!) Most dogs are less than 10 lbs. Both short and long haired. The ages range all the way from 5 month old puppies to senior dogs in need of a compassionate retirement home. I will get their individual bios up shortly, but it will take some time to do, as their are 26 dogs. In the mean time, they are available to be seen and played with any time the shelter is open. They will all be spayed/neutered before leaving the facility, and will come up to date on their vaccinations. For more information on individual dogs, you can also call the shelter at 507-644-3853.

Update: All the Puppies have gone to their new homes!

The Puppies:  There are two litters of puppies that came with the group, totalling 9 altogether. They were born sometime in Feb. 2019. The father is Apollo (we were told.) The mother of one litter is Roxy (we were told), and the other mother is unknown, but is possibly Freya.

***Adopted!*** Harley

Update 07.19.2019: Harley had his vetting day today; he is now neutered, his cherry eye is removed, his umbilical hernia is repaired, and his teeth have been cleaned. Now he just needs a home! He is a happy and spunky little dog who loves to go on adventures outdoors, but just as much loves to cuddle with a person inside!

Harley is a friendly and forward little personality when he’s comfortable; he loves attention from people, and he loves to think he’s a big shot in the house. He adores all the attention he can get.

After a life being a “stud dog” (I use that term only to mean he was mostly just used to make puppies), I think he craves the attention he missed out on. He enjoys being held. He can be dominant with other dogs.
(Though he will likely relax a bit after his neuter.) He seems fine around cats. He is not at all nippy, though due to his lack of experiences in the world at large, is nervous about new situations and people. Just give him a tiny bit of patience, and watch how he opens up!

***Adopted!*** Apollo

Apollo is a happy little food hound who loves to get attention! He just needs to trust you first. The quickest way to his heart is with some yummy treats. 🙂

***Adopted!*** Silky

Silky is a sweet little princess of a dog. She just wants to be near the people she trusts as much as possible. He fur is so soft and lovely to pet. She would adore having a warm lap to call her own.

Due to the situation she came from, she is not very experienced with the world, and thus treats new experiences with some caution. She is not at all nippy, and warms up pretty quickly once she realizes you just want to give her some loves. She was one of the dogs that used as a “breeder”, in other words, to just make more puppies to sell. She is a possible candidate to be the mother of some of the pups.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adopted!*** Fufu

Fufu is a fun and active little cutie who gets so excited to see people that she knows and trusts! She can’t get enough attention, and has such an abundance of affection to give. She is looking forwards to having a home where she can get the one-on-one type of attention that she craves!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adopted!*** Penelope

Penelope is a super happy, bright dog that radiates sunshine, at the risk of sounding overly dramatic. She wants affection so badly! She is one to come right to the front of her kennel, hoping for some affection. She is a touch shy of strangers at first, but it doesn’t take her terribly long to warm up and show her true happy self.

Freya is one of the more timid personalities, but so incredibly sweet once you earn her trust. She just wants to be a pampered lap dog.

Molly is as sweet as can be! She is a very happy little floofer who gets so excited to get some attention. She is incredibly soft; it’s hard to stop petting her! And that is just fine by her.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adopted!*** Pippi

Pippi is tiny and bold. She thinks she is a great dane! She is the kind of dog who wants to always be by your side, and loves to be held.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adopted!*** Scooby

Scooby is one of the sweetest dogs you will meet. He is a serious marshmallow! And he has the funniest little crooked grin. (No, we don’t know why his lower jaw is crooked, but it’s well healed and doesn’t cause problems.) He is one of the bigger dogs at over 20 lbs., which just means that there is an armful of Scooby to squeeze! He is one of the more confident dogs that came in this group.

When you go to visit him, do not be fooled by his toothy “snarls” through the door; he is just anxious that their is a barrier between him and everyone else. Open the door, and he is instantly happy to see you! He is not at all nippy or aggressive.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adopted!*** Lena

Lena is absolutely one of the sweetest, most outgoing and intelligent little dogs that you will meet. She wants to follow you everywhere and be with you all the time, if possible. She is quick to trust and eager to please. She wants to be your buddy, and help you with whatever it is you are doing.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adopted!*** Roxy

Roxy is a sweet and friendly little gal who gets so excited to get some loving once she knows and trusts you!

Due to the situation she came from, she is not very experienced with the world, and thus treats new experiences with some caution. ***Adopted!*** Jewel

Jewel is one of the more outgoing and confident of this group of dogs. She is such a sweetheart who wants to be with people as much as possible.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The Seniors: We have a few lovely sweet older doggies in the group as well. These dogs are especially in need of a soft bed and someone to care for them in their retirement years.

***Adoption Pending!*** Peanut. Male, chihuahua mix. Born appx. 12 years old. Special needs; has an autoimmune condition that causes fur loss on nose/ears/tail. Has bad hips. ***Skin condition is improving with medications. May or may not recurr.***

Peanut is a very sweet old gentleman who is looking for a caring retirement home, where he can be cherished and lavished with kindness for what time he has left. He is quiet and gentle with people he knows and trusts. However, of all the dogs here, he is the one that handles stress the least well. He doesn’t like lots of noise and large crowds of people, and will just shut down. When it’s just him and someone he likes, he is a happy little dog who will come to you in hopes of some pettings or treats. (He adores canned food! Though he can still eat some kibble.) He loves to explore and see new things, despite the stiffness in his rear legs.
After a life being a “stud dog” (I use that term only to mean he was mostly just used to make puppies), he can be dominant with other dogs.
(Though he will likely relax a bit after his neuter.) He seems fine around cats.
Peanut has what appears to be an autoimmune skin disorder with a secondary bacterial infections. It is very itchy and unpleasant, and some days when it is especially bad, he is just grumpy and doesn’t want to be touched. The vet has prescribed some medications to make him feel better, as well as a medicated bath. I pulled out the glove with little silicone nubs on it and massaged the shampoo into his skin for a good 15 minutes. He loved it! He seemed so relieved, and was especially chipper afterwards. He didn’t want to go back to his bed; he wanted to continue to explore. 🙂 We are hoping for the best, and trying to get him more comfortable. We want every one of these dogs to have a happy ending!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adopted!*** Tinkerbell

Tinkerbell is an absolute sweetheart. She just wants to be someone’s cherished lap companion. She is in amazingly good shape for being around 17 years old!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adoption Pending!*** Baby. Female, Papillon. 10 lbs. Appx. 10 years old. Special needs; missing most of her teeth. Congestive heart failure.

Baby is a doll! She is a bit slow to trust, but adores following you around and getting affection once that trust is earned. She is a very quiet and mild personality who gets along well with other dogs and cats. She is shy, but not at all nippy or aggressive. She is missing most of her teeth, so we have been feeding her a combination of canned food and kibble. (She does manage to eat the kibble alright.)

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

***Adopted!*** TJ

TJ is a sweet old gentleman who needs companionship like he needs food. He gets so sad when he’s kenneled and alone. You should just see the way that he lights up when a person takes him out for a walk or some attention! He can get overwhelmed by too much activity and noise, but then again he is part blind and deaf. I think most people would be the same way. He has not been nippy for us, he when he is feeling a little shut down.
